The Legal Matter Standard Specification (LMSS)

The Legal Matter Specification Standard (“LMSS”) is the SALI Alliance’s standard taxonomy for labeling legal work.

It provides consistent language for describing key attributes of matters (e.g., Services, Areas of Law, Industry) so data is consistently defined—and AI can produce outputs you can trust.

LMSS Viewer (Release Version)

The LMSS Viewer is SALI’s public, web-based portal for exploring the LMSS taxonomy and participating in the LMSS v3 “attribute-by-attribute” release process. It combines a fast, searchable taxonomy browser with a structured feedback workflow—so implementers can understand what a code means, see what’s changing, and submit comments that improve the standard before release. In the initial release of the v3 viewer, you will be able to review the updated Areas of Law and Industry Codes. Additional attributes will be published on a periodic basis and noted on our website.

What you can do with the LMSS Viewer:

  • Browse attributes by expanding and collapsing trees, with clear definitions, notes, and relationships for each code.
  • Search across the standard (by label, synonyms, ID/code, and keywords), with filters by attribute (e.g., Industry, Services, Area of Law).
  • See what changed with a built-in “Changes since last release” view (additions, edits, deprecations, moved codes), plus a human-readable change log.
  • Comment in context on any code (suggest wording changes, flag duplicates, propose new concepts), with threading, status, and moderator responses.
  • Track proposals through to resolution (Open → Under Review → Accepted/Rejected → Scheduled), with transparency on decisions.
  • Export for implementation (CSV/JSON/XML) for a selected attribute, a branch, or the full release package, including version numbers and effective dates.
  • Release/version support so teams can reference exact versions in mappings and downstream systems (with stable IDs and deprecation guidance).
  • Sharing and linking: copy a direct link to a code (for internal reviews, vendor tickets, mapping discussions).
